67Th anniversary of the Convention forthe protection of human rights

The 67th anniversary of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms was celebrated on 4 November 2017. The Convention entered into force for the Republic of Bulgaria on 7 September 1992. In accordance with Article 5(4) of the Constitution of the Republic of Bulgaria, the provisions of the Convention have direct effect and prevail over conflicting provisions of the domestic law.


The Contracting Parties to the Convention and its Protocols undertake to secure to everyone within their jurisdiction certain rights and freedoms. These protected rights and the right to life, the prohibition of torture, the right to liberty and security, the right to a fair trial, no punishment without law, the right to respect for private and family life, the freedom of thought, conscience and religion, the freedom of expression, the freedom of assembly and association, the right to an effective remedy, the right to peaceful enjoyment of possessions, the right to compensation for wrongful conviction, the right not to be tried or punished twice, and others.


The Convention applies to all natural and legal persons.
